ChlorTanker provides secondary containment for Tank Cars, Tank Trucks, Bulk Storage Tanks, and Barges.
The ChlorTanker® is designed to make safe and secure the transportation in railroad tank cars of pressurized (i.e., liquefied) chlorine gas and other toxic liquids, such as sulfur dioxide and anhydrous ammonia.
ChlorTanker provides safeguards against leaks and spills of toxic inhalation hazard (TIH) substances caused by collisions, derailment or failure of valves and other tank car components. It also thwarts possible terrorist attempts to cause a major toxic release.
Because tank cars are subject to all the hazards of railroading as well as terrorist targeting, it is necessary to manufacture or retrofit/modify these cars in a way that makes such TIH leaks, spills and releases all but impossible.
The most vulnerable spot on a tank car is the dome, which encloses all valves, fittings and the entrance to the manway that provides access into the car. To secure the tank car, it is necessary to make the dome and its connection to the body of the car both tamper-proof and strong enough to withstand the force of a crash or derailment.
That is exactly what ChlorTanker does. It passively (i.e., without relying on electrical power or backup emergency power) contains any leaks within the high-pressure dome and secures the dome against tampering.
During normal processing (i.e., unloading), the ChlorTanker’s failsafe shut-down valves are flanged into place, preventing any external release of material. Should a release occur within the dome, it is put into process (i.e., discharged into the connections used for normal unloading). No wet or dry scrubbing is required, and no hazardous waste is generated. The secondary containment system is passive, providing the ultimate in protection during transport, storage and unloading.
